Biography

Ognjen obtained his B.Sc. degree in Automatic Control Theory from Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Serbia, and M.Sc. in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence from Autonomous University of Barcelona / Computer Vision Centre (UAB/CVC), Spain, in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In 2014, he received a Ph.D. from Dept. of Computing, Imperial College London, UK. During his PhD,  Ognjen worked on machine-learning and computer vision models for automated analysis of human facial behaviour, and, in particular, multi-view facial expression analysis and context-sensitive analysis of dynamics of facial expressions, including their intensity and temporal dynamics. The approaches that he proposed address a number of modelling tasks including automated classification of facial expressions of emotions, intensity estimation of facial action units (AUs), and facial expressions of pain, among others. These are based on the state-of-the-art statistical frameworks including Gaussian Processes, and dynamic graphical models for spatio-temporal modelling based on Conditional Random Fields.

Ognjen's current research focus is on the design of novel context-sensitive and multi-modal machine-learning approaches for analysis of naturalistic human behaviour in the wild, i.e., outside the lab settings. This has a vast number of applications ranging from human-computer interaction (HCI) (for marketing and multi-media tagging), computer-mediated human-human interaction (e.g. Skype or Face-time, and for modelling of mimicry and liking), human-robot interaction (HRI) (for modelling of rapport between humans and robots), as well as its application to educational therapies for children with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), and health-care and wellbeing technologies in general.
