Biography
Since September 2003 I have been studying techniques to create better, more natural Human Machine Interaction (HMI) under the supervision of Prof. Maja Pantic. The topic I focus on in the HCI field is automatic facial expression recognition. In october 2004 I finished my Master of Science with a thesis titled Facial Action Unit Detection in Face Video at Delft University of Technology.
Since March 2006 the group of Maja Pantic, including me, moved to Imperial College London. It is here that I wrote my PhD thesis, titled "Timing is everything: A spatio-temporal approach to the analysis of facial actions".
It has been a while already since Simon Colton, Maja Pantic and me entered and won the BCS AI contest with our combined effort The Emotionally Aware Painting Fool. This generated quite some publicity and we intend to continue working on this project, preferably in a way that engages the public. Have a look here for some nice pictures and videos from our system. Also, we are looking for Masters students who want to do a project to improve the sensing capabilites of The Emotionally Aware Painting Fool.
Currently I am working as a postdoc on the European SEMAINE project. In this project we aim to build a sensitive artificial listener. The artificial agent should be capable of recognising non-verbal cues from both the voice and the face of the user and react appropriately. The Imperial Colleg HCI^2 team is responsible for recognising all non-verbal cues from the video input channel.
