Affect analysis

 Our lab has a long history in detecting and analysing facial and audiovisual displays of affective states. Early research aimed at analysis of six basic facial expressions of emotions (happiness, anger, fear, disgust, sadness, and surprise) in frontal views of people recorded in a laboratory setting [1], [2], [3]. This line of research has been resumed recently and we proposed the first robust head-pose-invariant facial expression detector that can handle even the cases of unknown head poses and unknown facial expressions [4]. As it has been shown that in everyday interactions people exhibit non-basic, subtle and rather complex affective states like thinking and embarrassment, our recent research focused on dimensional (e.g., valance and arousal) and continuous (rather than quantized) analysis of naturalistic affective displays based on multiple modalities (audio and visual) and multiple cues (facial expression, head gesture, body movement). The related work includes the first approach to audiovisual dimensional analysis of human affect [5], [6], as well as the first approach to continuous dimensional analysis of human affect based on multiple visual cues [7]. The latter is based on newly proposed Output-Associative Relevance Vector Machine regression.
